Painting (Rough) – Pre-Work Inspection Checklist

This checklist ensures the home is ready for rough painting by verifying the completion and quality of drywall, trim, and other surfaces. It focuses on protecting fixtures, floors, and tubs while ensuring all surfaces are clean, smooth, and free of damage. Completing this checklist ensures painting can proceed efficiently and results in a professional finish.

Review plans with the Site Superintendent

Receive the purchase order

Inspect windows to confirm they are intact and undamaged

Protect vinyl and wood floors

Cover and protect tubs, showers, and countertops

Ensure all drywall is installed, taped, mudded, and sanded

Verify drywall is straight with no bows or depressions

Confirm joints in drywall are smooth and clean

Inspect drywall for excessive nicks, gouges, or scrapes

Ensure drywall has no raised facepaper from over-sanding

Inspect corners for hairline cracks

Ensure drywall has no nail pops or loose nails

Verify trim fits properly around all windows

Confirm trim fits properly around all doors

Inspect baseboards for nicks, gouges, scratches, or other damage

Ensure nails in baseboards are set to the correct depth with no protrusions

Verify baseboards are secured tightly with proper corner alignment

Ensure baseboards around cabinets are tacked in place

Verify all doors are installed according to plan, are plumb, square, and swing correctly with the proper distance for carpet or vinyl

Ensure bifold doors are square, plumb, and tracks are securely installed

Confirm attic accesses are installed correctly with all trim in place

Verify there is no missing trim in any room

Ensure chair rail or crown molding is installed if required by the plan or options

Clean and broom-sweep the house, ensuring it is free of debris
